R12 to R134a Air-Con Retrofit / Conversion

R12 refrigerant has been banned in Australia for decades, meaning older vehicles still running R12 systems can no longer be legally regassed with the original refrigerant. If you own a classic, vintage or older vehicle with an R12 air conditioning system, a conversion to R134a is the only legal path to getting your AC cold again. At WestCoast Auto Air Conditioning Mandurah, we carry out R12 to R134a conversions on most older vehicles — replacing the fittings, vacuuming the old gas and recharging the system with R134a refrigerant.

What's Included in an R12 to R134a Conversion

- Removal of any remaining R12 refrigerant

- Replacement of R12 service fittings with R134a compatible fittings

- Vacuum test to check the system holds pressure

- Recharge with R134a refrigerant

- Full performance test

Note: If we identify a fault or leak during the process, we'll let you know before proceeding. The system needs to be in good working order before a regas can be completed.

Common Questions People Ask About R12 to R134a Conversions

Why can't I just regas my old car with R12?

R12 refrigerant was phased out in Australia due to its impact on the ozone layer and is no longer legally available for automotive use. R134a is the standard replacement refrigerant for older systems.

Will R134a work as well as R12 in my old system?

R134a performs well in converted systems. In some cases there may be a slight difference in cooling performance compared to the original R12 setup, but for most vehicles the result is cold, reliable air conditioning.

Do the fittings need to be changed?

Yes — R12 and R134a use different service fittings. Replacing the fittings is a standard part of the conversion and prevents cross-contamination with the wrong refrigerant in the future.

What if there's a leak or a fault in my system?

If we find a leak or fault during the conversion process we'll stop and let you know before proceeding. A regas should not be performed on a system that can't hold pressure — we'll recommend the right repair first.

What vehicles do you do R12 conversions on?

Most older passenger vehicles, classics and vintage cars that were originally fitted with R12 systems. If you're not sure whether your vehicle qualifies, give us a call and we'll let you know.

How long does the conversion take?
Most R12 to R134a conversions can be completed in a single visit. Timeframes depend on the condition of the system and whether any additional work is needed.
